When an animal is injured, diseased, in pain, or too weak to be transported or treated, on-farm humane killing is the only option to ensure the animal is spared avoidable pain, suffering or distress. If you are killing an animal for emergency reasons relating to the welfare of the animal, i.e. immediate slaughter is necessary, you do not need a slaughter licence. The HSA’s Emergency Slaughter booklet and DVD package provides detailed information and practical guidance on the humane killing of injured, diseased and non-viable livestock. You should always use the most humane method available.
See the HSA’s Farewell – Making the Right Decision booklet, which provides horse owners with practical advice and options for humane destruction of an old or injured horse, in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
